Edge of Spalting

You are here: Home / News / Spalting Samples / Edge of Spalting

Below are examples of extreme spalting by species.  These examples aren’t typical spalting, but show what can be accomplished with either a lot of luck or a little science.

Most of these are user submitted.  If you have a piece of wood where you definitely know the species, and it has some crazy spalting, you can e-mail it to me and I’ll put it up on this page.  Please include how you would like your name referenced, and if you have a website you would like linked as well.

River Birch

The below images are from some insanely spalted river birch, as submitted by Ed Street. The images show the end grain of the logs, and some of items he turned from them.

Avocado

Also from Ed, some heavily spalted avocado from Hawaii.  Apparently pretty pricey!

Holly

Spalted holly sent in by Rob Bocik.  There are no words.  None.  I have no idea what is happening here, except that nature is mysterious, and this is the strangest thing I have ever seen.  Ever.  I dare you to find better ‘natural’ spalt.  I want to mount this piece of wood to my office wall like a prized deer head.
